I just got back from an IMAX showing of this film and have been sitting in front of my computer for 10 minutes doing two things. First, trying to figure out whether to give this 2 or 3 stars, and second, really decide what I think of this film. I know one thing is for sure. I used to be able to say I LOVED all of Christopher Nolan's films, however, with the release of TENET, I don't know if I can or cant anymore. Part of me truly loved it, but another part of me truly hated it. I will get the positives out of the way first. The score by Ludwig Göransson was absolutely SPECTUCULAR! I loved the theory of time inversion and Nolan's obsession with time not just in TENET, but in many of his films. I thought the acting was superb, my favorite character being Robert Pattinson's character! And lastly, the visuals and cinematography, as in every Christopher Nolan film are absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives for me. Lets start off with the dialogue, oh wait, I cant talk about the dialogue because I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND IT! So many times a character said something and the loud Göransson music or background noise made it damn near impossible to hear what they were saying. Second, I typically love it when films have complex plots and the filmmakers don't treat us like we are dumb and they do not spoon feed us everything. However, there is a balance filmmakers must keep with this. Make the plot too complex and don't give your audience enough to go on, and watching the film will either become very boring or very frustrating, and I felt very frustrated trying to follow this overly and unnecessarily complex plot. I genuinely had no idea what the hell was going on for many many scenes. Overall I am very disappointed in Chris Nolan here. There is a great film in here somewhere buried beneath horrible sound mixing, extremely hard to hear dialogue, and an unnecessarily complex plot. This film gets a C+ for me.
