After careful consideration, I have to set a record in place. This is my favourite Joni album. Its the suite of songs that defy a single or a hit. The work is a revolution in style and composition. They don't simply confess as a singer-songwriter, they disclose aspects of Joni Mitchell's life. It's her thoughts, pain, and love that defies the verse and chorus of pop sings. They are musical poetry, they are songs that are prosaic to me.
What is particularly impressive about the entire albums is the shift between songs on the piano and songs on guitars. The compositions display Joni's talent, and her vision. They also happen to rock my soul. Court and Spark comes very close to being brilliant in the sense of its artistry, and Hissing of Summer Lawns is that tentative and bold step outside the arena. They both get silver and bronze. But for me, and my heart and life, FOR THE ROSES, is the gold that can never be taken away. BLUE is a beauty I can't ignore, however, For the Roses wins me over for everything it says and does musically. Dr. Martin Patrick MA - London.
