Great movie. Though it's interesting it seems to be very polarizing. I see three types of responses:
1. People/movie critics/newspapers - that see the movie as an indirect attack on their politics/newspapers.
2. People who are big on environmental issues/climate scientists who appreciate the not so subtle reference to global warming.
3. People able to just enjoy the movie without thinking too much about it/ accepting it's a silly movie about a meteor heading to earth. Not questioning too deeply people's motivations and seeing it as a light hearted piece.
Most people are in the latter camps. The movie in this light is hilarious with some great moments.
A complexity is that while it is ment to be playful take on people obsession with social media, greed, and the dominance of technology, there is an obvious critique of powerful organisations response to global warming - how good a job it does on this is up for debate. For those that think governments have not done enough , are sceptical about technology saving us, they will like it. Others may not be able to stomach the politics and understandably hate it. Alternatively if you just see it as a light hearted movie - accept it's premise and you're in for a good time. Its understandable why ratings vary but definitely worth a watch.
