I really enjoy watching Judge Judy usually as I’m having my evening meal. There is one continual aspect of her interaction with the litigants that I find highly distasteful and would like Judge Judy to consider. In particular it is the disparaging things she says re mental illness apparently to point out highlight the incongruities of the position that one of her litigants are maintaining. As a mother of a mentally ill son I find these kinds of remarks such as “ Are you on some psychiatric drugs? or have you been treated for a psychiatric condition.” etc certainly do little to dispel pervasive negative attitudes to those who suffer from this devastating illness. The result of these remarks usually results in some amusement by the audience watching but at the expense of those with mental illness and is a cruel reminder that society has little empathy for the this illness that destroys and diminishes the potential of so many lives.
