This game is really fun and represents aspects of action rpg games that have elements very similar to games already on the market but in a new original flavor that feels just right for the indie game industry it’s coming out of. I’ve put in 50 hours already after the multiplayer launch and would recommend this to new players who wants a fun exciting experience and game that they will want to invest a lot of time in. Here are the pros and cons.
Pros: Very versatile game play. You get to choose a variety of different classes with 5 base classes that can specialize in 3 subclasses each, giving a total of 15 unique ability sets. Each character levels 1 to 100 and the campaign lasts til around 60ish. You use points in a complex yet fulfilling way by having passive points into your class, as well as points to individually empower your abilities. The synergy between using abilities with similar magic types and then having them specialize to cover different needs for the player makes for an extremely unique experience that can only be described as a nerds dream. You can try out all sorts of things and really experiment with new abilities. On top of this, the uniques and rare gear in the game can further benefit your abilities and their specialities adding for a truly niche experience when you play. The story follows a player trying to save their land from wrath of a war hungry god and get sucked back and forth thru time to try and stop him. It’s got decent writing and a cool concept.
Cons: the story is probably the weakest part of last epoch and is in general the things I’m going to complain about the most: the campaign is one of the those things that you just don’t enjoy doing in retrospect. It is fun the first time and that is IT. The story ends abruptly, the ending is shallow, and overall the campaign is sort of just a pre-version of what endgame is like where you clear maps and take on enemies. It becomes very repetitive and in general if you are looking for a game that you have to dynamically change how you play as you go, this is not it. You will basically pick a meta and stick to it, sometimes never deviating from the same buttons or not even pressing any at all and just running around. There is also an irritating and unnecessary difficulty wall that hits towards the end of the campaign, which essentially prevents the player from doing a lot of things. This wall being the two end bosses of the campaign are extremely dmg heavy and can easily make new players rage quit. The supposed reason is that the devs wanted to make people not use builds or gear that focused only on attack and not defense, yet they do a poor job of encouraging thre player to do so at any point until these bosses, thus why I describe it at as a wall. It is not really needed for the player to experience hard difficulty as 1.) there is a hard core mode already and 2.) the endgame bosses you can do right after this campaign are far easier than either of these two bosses and you won’t find them nearly as difficult once you have decent gear. But as a new player you will hate this part of the game and may even consider playing other parts. I don’t blame you, the campaign is made to be an easy walk through the park and then revealed to be a trick to then get you to redo your whole build and gear set. I personally thought it was the worst part of the game. Once you get thru it, the game becomes way more enjoyable.
