So flat. So incredibly flat. Like a la croix water that was left out over night and drank the next morning.
I understand the statement that it makes. I watched it with my wife, whom is ironically an assistant at a law firm and was recently refused a raise by her male boss’ despite her tenure and her absorbing what used to be two positions.
The mundanity, the oppression, the covering of sexual abuse, the manipulation, the dehumanization. Yes we get it. I understand the film was making a statement to how prevalent it is in corporate America and abounding in the entertainment industry.
But the plot lacks a story arc. It lacks character development. Julia Garner’s performance showed her attempting to do the best she could with a flat script. She’s a great actress. But there is no hero’s journey to our protagonist. Their is no resolution to the conflict. She never even stands up for herself, instead she mouses around apologizing for her existence. If you want to make a movie about female empowerment, why not have resolution of her overcoming her obstacles? A basic story arc? Her standing up for herself? This feels like a 2 minute PSA was drawn out into an hour and a half. Her life sucks because she’s a woman and she’s trapped. Good job you, Kitty you promoted real change and inspired young women everywhere.
