I personally own battlefield earth. I've read it about 60 times over the past 2 years or so, and fall in love with it again and again. It survived a week out in pouring rain (it's still got water stains and little spots all over it, and smells off), but I still love it. It's a testament to L. Ron Hubbard's special kind of writing genius, that his book has been through so much, and not only lives, but thrives. I keep it on my nightstand, and read it constantly. At a total of 1024 pages (The book portion, not the extras), you may expect it to be rather dense. And sure, the first portion of the book is rather boring, but the rest is a wonderland of plot twists, story elements, characters galore, side plots, dangers, risks and rewards, and more. A truly great read, let me tell you. I would recommend it for anybody who loves a good sci-fi book, even if it's a tad long. However, in spite of it's size, it's a surprisingly fast read, due mainly to the fact that after you get out of the first portion, you may not wish to put it down. It is truly a work of art.
