Infinite Darkness was good. After going on a big series binge, I was excited to see this show available on Netflix. After my disappointment with Resident Evil Vendetta, my expectations with this film were, well; not very high. This film was well executed! The story was good! The voice acting was on spot! And the animation? Stellar! A very good looking Netflix series. There were parts of this film that I’d consider to be visual art, but there were also a few parts I couldn’t help but chuckle at. (MINIMAL SPOILER ALERT!) The fourth Episode has this bio weapon, (I won’t give anymore details than that!) and seeing this enemy move, and leap; and interact? It made me hysterical with laughter. I can’t explain why? I guess I feel like the animation resembled a parody of “The Incredible Hulk”. There’s nothing inherently wrong with a few campy moments! I can’t stress that enough! I personally have a soft spot for Leon’s cheap one-liners “wish I had some cheese.” That leads me to another point! The characters felt like theirselves in this! Leon and Claire were, well? They were Leon and Claire. :D
I think that a big issue I have with resident evil on the TV screen is that, surrounded by the insurmountable amounts of action and choreography, these characters lose their personality. I remember watching resident evil Vendetta and being quite disappointed with the characters and story. They did so many awesomely unbelievable stunts and action moves, and eventually it just fell flat. The plot of that movie was terrible to me, but I digress. I’m here to talk about “Infinite Darkness”.
I’m pleased to say that all of the action in this series felt very smooth and believable! It was cool to watch and it wasn’t completely ridiculous (no Leon driving motorcycles off of exploding buildings while somehow landing precise gun shots on a B.O.W.) This series cared about the plot and narrative and managed to keep the action packed moments within the realm of reality. (No Boulder punching found in this Netflix series.) All of this being said, I did find the action to be minimal. There wasn’t a lot of it, but it certainly was cool when it happened.
All the characters felt very reasonable. Clair was Clair, and Leon was Leon. Unfortunately for all of the Claire fans out there, she received less screen time than would be preferred; seeing her at all was still very pleasing to me. There were even a handful of references to RE 4! I was genuinely pleased with the series and enjoyed my time watching it. It’s terribly short... only four episodes, but that didn’t make me enjoy it less. It was “short, and sweet.”
As always, if you’re a veteran fan of Resident Evil, then you’re in for a treat. If you’re a casual viewer? There are a handful of things that may not make as much sense.
If you like resident evil for the action then unfortunately there’s less of it here, but if you like the series for its narrative? Then I’m certain you’ll enjoy this.
I’m a pretty die hard fan of the series, and I felt like it was a breathe of fresh air. It was a good quality experience. The story of this Netflix Original might not be as pivotal as a mainline Resident Evil game, it’s still a good enjoyable time. I give it five Stars.
