I had no idea of this movie but I love Matt Damon so i bought it. I found it absolutely intriguing and very well done. It’s thought provoking and emotional. Yes it’s about a murder but not your typical. Maybe, like me, you are left wondering at the end what really happened about the murder and what really happened about the man chained in the basement. These points are interesting because both times we are not there to see, to know.
Matt Damon can pull off sensitivity and emotion- i see it in his films. It’s convincing. His attachment to Maya is sincere and we wonder is this a second chance for him to be the father he never was to his daughter? Again, we weren’t there for that. Leaving Maya scene was powerfully done and you can almost see their hearts breaking in the scene.
This movie is complex and leaves a lot to interpretation yet there are clues strewn about in the entire film.
One clue is when Allison talks about letting it all go and acceptance. She refers to “the guilt”. Why would she say guilt - use that word -if she was telling everyone she is innocent?
This was interesting because so casually said and there was no “why do you feel guilty”? question
You have to watch and listen closely to this film. Its not mindless entertainment fodder which is the second reason I love it.
Love a sequel just to see Maya and Matt together again.
