Damsel is a movie that tries to buck the tropes of traditional damsel movies by embracing the tropes of every other genre of movie. This approach, ambitious as it is, unfortunately leads to a story line that doesn't stray far from predictability. The film, while diverse in its genre influences, misses the mark in delivering the unexpected twists and innovative plot developments that might have set it apart.
Central to the film's appeal is Millie Bobby Brown, whose performance is the linchpin of its success. Brown manages to pull it back from the brink of mediocrity by summoning the same kind of "girl power" energy that has made her so successful thus far. Unfortunately, Brown's girl power alone can't engage audiences enough to make this a memorable film, or one whose reach extends beyond immediate entertainment value.
Overall, Damsel is a movie that is fun to watch, primarily due to Brown's performance. Despite its attempt at genre innovation and the solid execution of its lead actress though, the movie struggles to break free from the constraints of predictability. At the very least, I don't want my 2 hours back.
