This was my first novel that I ever bought by Isabelle Allende, I was taken on a journey and I cried throughout it. Then raved about it and I think 6 of my friends bought the book. I went on to buy other books by Isabelle but they never grabbed me like ‘Paula’ did.
I was then thrilled to hear that Isabelle was coming out to the Melbourne Writers Festival, so I bought my ticket to attend, we would get to see this legend and she would also be reading from her latest book.
We then got into line to meet Isabelle and I took a couple of books and I was so nervous as I got closer to her. I will never forget the moment her eyes met mine, she smiled at me and I froze🤣 but she must have seen my nervous state! So she grabbed my books and asked ‘So who will I be signing them for!?’ I then blurted out.. ‘Evelyn… my name is Evelyn ..I am a huge fan of yours..I loved Paula!’ She smiled and thanked me for the love! I then went on about how I was born in Santiago, Chile and have been back to visit my family and got them to read ‘Paula’ in spanish of course, they became fans as well! I told her she got me back into writing.
Isabelle signed my books and my bookmark! She encouraged me to write everyday about something that I am passionate or interested in, to keep going with it. I told her I was going to be travelling to New York, LA and San Francisco, it was then she told me to look her up when I was there, so we could continue the chat! I thanked her and gave her a hug and got a kiss on the cheek.
I walked away knowing she was not only my favourite writer but my idol❤️
My mum was in a coma while in ICU and I turned to writing about this time so it could one day be read to her, but she passed 5 months later, it tore me apart, my heart broke and I was in a bubble for awhile.
I know I would like only one person to read the rough copy and that is Isabelle.
I hope to get this to her soon.
