All of the above complaints. Too long, character development is mostly stagnant, and the modern language and social issues don’t fit so they are distracting and awkward This book is the definition of subtraction by addition. I think that root of the problem is that the author decided from the beginning to make this book his longest. He mined out most of the interesting parts of the characters so he had to find material to fill pages. Unnecessary history, internal struggles etc. He promised a big showdown at the end but that failed on its own terms and left me feeling cheated. The book gets a generous 2 stars and my farewell to the author. I don’t like or care about the things that he wants to write about.

The good parts of the story were overshadowed by the bad parts. 2 dimensional characters and the setting made it difficult to relate to the main characters experiences. The main characters were sad, angry, and very little time was spent on exploring why. Without depth, the characters felt incomplete, The title character had mental health issues that were ignored by the adults that could have helped her and the teen age sexuality parts were way too graphic and felt creepy. Turtles all the way down is a much better story, skip this book and go for that one

I gave up after the first chapter. I like the dialog between the Lily and the doctor until it got gross. I don’t want read about cheating and one night stands. Hurt people can only hurt people, and it’s not my type of read.
