I thought it was ok. It was almost like a long music video. Movie could have been easily 90 minutes. There's not much story line. And the continuous dance/musical numbers felt like I was watching a Jason Bourne movie, substituting the musical numbers for the running/chase scenes. I left Barbie wondering what they wanted the film to be when it grew up.
I like Greta Gerwig's work, but this felt unfocused. Like she hadn't flushed out the ideas to maturity. Kate McKinnon was the same character she always is. Quirky yet insightful. Margot Robbie did not break, even in the slightest, which was part of the sell. And Ryan Gosling threw himself into this part. I just wish it had been a better written part. I thought they all did a good job, but talk of an Oscar?
There was dialogue that was important, but it got lost in such a preachy delivery, it felt forced and already out of date for me. I felt kind of ping ponged between praise for Barbie (let's not trash Matel, they produced it) and disdain for Barbie. The positions just got watered down as the movie played.
It was ok. I think it was ambitious movie to make.
