Besides the visuals, music and Phoenix, the movie was a disappointment. No clear background of Napoleon. He is a man baby played by a wonderful actor. If you're versed in the French Revolution/Napoleonic Era, you will know the historical figures. If you're not, then they're forgettable characters. It assumes you know these people, but the average person does not know. Those who do know will be left disappointed by its skewed portrayal of these historical figures.
I understand Scott is English. Nonetheless, there is no justification for his portrayal of the French. The movie goes out of its way to shine light on the Brits. The French are brutes while the Brits are gentleman. Calling it British Propaganda would be a proper description. The potential of this movie is tarnished by its borderline satire approach.
