I read this book in 11th or 12th grade and I enjoyed reading this book. For starters, I find the characters to be fascinating including Ishmael, Captain Ahab, Queequeg, Starbuck and so on. The book also has lots of esoteric or SAT/ACT vocabulary words such as “perdition”, “conflagration”, “countenance”, “meridian”, etc. In addition, there is a lot of allegory and some figurative language. Furthermore, this book is more than an adventure story but also has morals of the story. For example, if you mess with nature then nature will mess with you. Another example, obsession can spread like a disease and can get people killed. Case in point, Captain Ahab is obsessed with killing Moby Dick. Soon his obsession became the crew’s obsession. But, that obsession became deadly when many crew members died trying to kill Moby Dick. Overall, this book is a very interesting read but at an arduous reading level (11th-12th grade level). If you cannot read and comprehend this book, then you probably do not deserve to graduate from high school let alone college. I would strongly recommend this book for 11th-12th graders and for adults.
