I feel there’s always so many ways to make a movie more interesting and actually good. This felt like a parody. I ended up laughing at the absurdity of the whole thing on numerous occasions. I also felt bad because I felt like this movie was supposed to be more serious? I seriously could not figure out the tone of the film.
It’s considered a horror film? Psssh it was nothing but potty humor and maybe a bit of surrealism but horror? Maybe the amount of bodily fluids we had to witness, and Solange’s naked mole rat scene in the tub or the scene of her with six breasts, that was pretty horrific. Especially when Solange pretended to be a baby and then fell and farted at them. I literally had to get up and leave the theater for a minute cackling.
The accent from Solange made me wish for subtitles. The relationship between her and Norman Jean or whatever was never explored. The miscarriage or still birth experienced by Brandy was never explained thoroughly or explored. Did the baby pass away from sids? Or die in the hospital is that when her sleepwalking started, when did the sleepwalking start? Her job schedule issues that lead her to quit and the light racism thrown in for good measure just felt unnecessary. I mean I get needing the money plot but meh.
Norman ends up not even being in the movie most of the time and when he was his scenes felt thin. Brandy’s acting felt perfunctory and silly since they weren’t bringing anything as a pair they seemed to just decide let’s be more gross and let Solange be more absurd.
I feel this movie could have redeemed itself if we focused on the unexplored threads. An overzealous mother in law with great manipulation skills and a bit of otherworldly power. Takes over the home and Brandys family maybe dies and her spirit possess the house. Now she’s contending with the spirit of Solange.
Or maybe Brandy deals with psychosis and ptsd from her miscarriage and Norman blames her for losing the baby and is overprotective of this new life to be born. She slowly loses her mind and does things she can’t explain tying the sleep walking in better, she slowly wilts as Solange gets stronger and younger? And now she’s fighting for her health, mind and body back? And her family.
So many things there to explore but sadly the ball was dropped. Meh
