My personal review : 7/10
This Nelson directorial is a movie made to cater to 110% of your entertainments needs and its entertainment with a capital E.
Lets move to the detail review.
1) Humor
The Humor in this movie is a let down especially when compared to Doctor. Although Beast involves the same cast in Nelsons previous film like YogiBabu, Redin Kingsley, Kili, Mahaali, except for VTV Ganesh and some of Selvaragavans portions, the comedy scenes did not ganer laughs.
This is because the actors were not given enough screen time. The movie was Vijay centric. Had the Director given a total of 10 more minutes of screen time to all the comedians, this wouldn't have been a negative.
2) Story
The story of the movie is predictable and straightforward. It can be broken down into three memorable parts unlike any other movie thanks to only three locations being used in the plot. The happenings before the mall sequence, the mall sequence and the happenings after the mall sequence. (90% of the movie was shot in the mall.) Although many have complained that the story is below average compared to Vijay's Thuppaki or Kathi and Nelson's previous two films, but hey!, how many can develop sophisticated stories on more complex concepts back to back to back? The answer is none.
Rather, we should appreciate that the screen play was 100% spot on and the brilliance of the direction. There were no lags or unnecessary scenes at all.
3) Acting
All supporting actors have done justice and Pooja's acting is tolerable given that this is a Vijay film.
4) Action scenes
All action scenes are well crafted although unrealistic but come on, why do you expect logic in a commercial film ?
Its quite the memory lane they brought back the dialogue, "Oruvati mudivupanita yen pecha nane kekamate".
5) Music
Just gold, kudos to Ani for the BGM.
6) Casting
The casting of the villian was a complete mess. Not only wasn't there a grounded villian (perhaps having a more serious villain would have boosted the film like Vinay in Doctor, Kathi or like the ideal villain for modern cinema in Thuppaki movie.) I was in an internal conflict as to whether Ankur Vikal or Shine Tom Chacko is the villian whom the makers anounced. Tom does not do anything in the movie that comes within miles of what a villian is supposed to be.
May be if the humor and casting of the villian had been taken care off like i recommend the film would have been an 8/10 or even 9/10.
Overall, if Siva Karthikeyan's Doctor is watchable twice, Beast is watchable once.
