There's definitely a lot of good things to say about this movie. It was genuinely funny. Every time Leo cried I had fits of laughter. The pussycat scene with Lena Dunham, the precious dog, Brad Pitt in all his glory, Margot Robbie being gorgeous, I could go on. However I think the plot is ridiculous and it ruined it for me!
The style of this movie was hard to follow and did not make much sense. For example the timeline of events hopped back and forth between past present and future for seemingly no reason. I don't believe it aided the storytelling at all. Also towards the end the narrator was more prevalent than he had been in the entire movie so it seemed like the narration just sprung up out of nowhere. I think they threw in the Cliff Booth antenna scene just so that they could show Brad Pitt shirtless. As soon as he got up there he had a flashback. They could have just shown the flashback. I'm not mad at it though
It was insinuated throughout the movie that Cliff Booth killed his wife but in the scene that portrayed the event, her death was not actually shown. Another few details that stuck out to me as weird is the constant focus on feet as well as the female actors snoring while sleeping. I understand that women snore but I don't understand why it would be important enough to include two different scenes of women snoring in the movie. What does it mean!! I can't help but think that Quentin Tarantino has a foot fetish as well as a snoring fetish.
I won't spoil the ending in this review but I will say that it felt rushed and cheesy. I felt like I was watching something from the Scary Movie series with how ridiculously violent and gore-filled that scene was at the very end.
Overall, it's funny and a great movie for people who just like to see an All-Star cast. I just think this is the product of Quentin Tarantino being bored. Of all the cinematic interpretations one could have had about the Manson murders in Hollywood I think this was the most desensationalized, anticlimactic, confusing direction they could've taken.
