This is a movie that lacks one crucial element. You have no reason to care about any of the characters. The very first scene establishes the fact that Lydia Tar is not the only female conductor out there and that she is not a trailblazer. As the movie continues and Tar's character flaws are exposed, there are fewer reasons I might have to care about her.
On the plus side Cate Blanchett gives a great acting performance. The cinematography is also terrific at times. But these things cannot save a poor script. For large portions of the film you will find yourself desperately hoping the end is coming. Desperately dull and extremely disappointing. One star for Cate Blanchett and even that is generous.
