I know there are a lot of middle aged metal heads bashing this movie for its two dimensional plot and "unrealistic" character traits but I have a couple of points to make
1. This is a movie meant for teenagers; of course 40 year old men who grew up smoking pot and hating chick flics arent going to like it. It's a coming of age story literally made to be different from other coming of age stories.
2. (Most of) the characters are generally realistic (in the eyes of whoever directs netflix films, anyways) Hunter's dad being a rich plastic surgeon isn't unrealistic. It's supposed to be an ironic plot device like "oh look at this privileged rich white douche who's mad at the world for no reason." It aids in his character development by being the worst part of his character.
3. You have to take the "seriousness" of this movie with a GRAIN OF SALT. It's a comedy. It's ironic. It's not supposed to be so extremely very true to what actual metal fans are like. The point of the movie was to find another way that directors could set their protagonists apart from everyone else. Using metal was a good choice for this because it appealed to kids who like metal.
4. Overall, I think this movie was an extremely good watch. Sure it wasn't like a cinematic masterpiece, but the soundtrack was sick, the acting was okay, the characters were lovable (if not redeemable) and the irony made it extremely funny. Also, the cameos were a very pleasant surprise. I liked the plot, and while their could've possibly been a more diverse cast, it was cool to see a teen movie that set itself apart from others. (Also Emily was rly hot)
