It’s hard not to be interested in a project with familiar faces such as Hilary Duff and Josh Peck while having a huge namesake such as HIMYM. That being said there’s very little similarities between HIMYM and HIMYF so it’s basically impossible to compare the two while watching them since they’re so different. If you look at HIMYF as a stand-alone and not a sequel, it’s not hard to tell that the show is seriously lacking in all departments. At best it’s a background show you have on while trying to sleep, do hw or chores.
The cast lacks chemistry, the jokes are bland, the way the narrator explains current events is subpar, the acting is god awful (aside from Hillary Duff and Chris Lowell), the ensemble of cast is honestly kind of embarrassing. There’s so much culture clash and irrelevant story lines going on that it’s hard to focus on a core story. It’s a ten episode season and out of the those episodes I can say I only enjoyed the last 3.
Looking at things from a sequel perspective:
Jokes aren’t as funny
The cast isn’t as relatable (even though their more diverse and come from different backgrounds)
The cast lacks chemistry
The acting isn’t as good
Lacks the creativity and cleverness of HIMYM
The narration isn’t as good as Bob Sagets
The “love” and “emotions” in the show feel forced, there’s so much back and forth per episode that it’s hard to really “ship” anyone the way you would with Lily and Marshall, Ted and Robin, Robin and Barney, Ted and Victoria.
By the end of the season you want the story to be wrapped up because it’s cringey and hard to watch. Charlie and Ellen are just about the worst characters in the show and are there just to fill the 6 man group. While Meredith comes in just to be a speed bump that works itself out in the end without real character development. While you never expect a sequel to better than the original, and you always worry about the sequel damaging the brand, it’s basically impossible to acknowledge HIMYF as a true sequel to HIMYM. It’s like Star Wars fans hating episodes 7, 8, 9. Without the same writers, directors, and vibe the show won’t be given much thought as time goes on, like how no one ever talks about “the next karate kid”
