It is Tim Burton at his finest. The story, of course, is pure fairy tale, but it is so broodingly told in Burtons style that it is almost spellbinding at times. The musical score, done by the amazing Danny Elfman (Burton’s go to composer) Is so beautiful and haunting that the movie would not have been the same without it. Depp’s performance is spectacular, I don’t think anyone else could pull off the sheer charm and oddity like he was able to do. There is nothing quite like this movie, with it’s odd mix of 80’s suburbia paired with Brothers Grimm style imagery. They simply don’t make movies like this anymore, and if you have not seen it, I would strongly recommend it.

I’m not a superhero movie kind of guy, generally, but I liked this one. It has some of that 90’s machismo (in a good way) and is well cast. In an era of movies that look more like video games than cinema, this one is no different - however, it certainly ranks up there as having the some of the best ‘graphics’. It really is quite visually stunning, and beautifully shot. The story ranges from quite sincere to typically ridiculous, but overall it’s at least entertaining to watch - which is more then I can say for the vast majority of movies these days. A solid choice if you want to be entertained and subjected to a visual feast.
