I was in the Air Force during Vietnam. At that time three stripes was the rank of sergeant. Some years after the war it was changed to Airman First Class, which was only two stripes during that war. The "sergeant" in the this movie also would not have worn the bright white chevrons in the jungles of Vietnam. All branches wore "subdued" military insignia, so not to stand out in the deep shadows of the brush.
