100 pages in and not impressed so far. It's written okay, and the comments on the silliness of humans can be fun. But it's very predictable and it comes off as a cheesy romantic novel, not only for his apparent feelings for the plain and uninteresting wife but for the whole of humanity. The writer chose a well educated and wealthy person so there is no real examples of the cruelty that some people experience at the hands of others. It's limited and basic. It hasn't done any justice to the "superior" alien species, one hug and it makes him question everything? I'll finish reading and update, hopefully it surprises me~
It keep getting worse. Main issues: (spoilers ahead)
1) sexual assult that's not taken seriously
2) the saint or slut represention of women
3) the ridiculous part about fighting a bully after a suicide attemp, as if this is positive
4) the girl who likes violent relationships (why is this a trope that men love to write)
5) the tattoo tear on the violent man, (as if the author has had zero experience with real people)
6) the consent obsession of beauty
7) his wife and son being conventionally attractive and the bully being ugly, because ugliness belongs to the poor and horrible working class people only
8) the son is an arsonist and has shown rude and mean traits, but we are meant to just assume he is completely innocent in regards to the bullying, that it is completely one-sided. The aliens response to use bully tactics to resolve the issue is primative.
There are so many other issues.
I rolled my eyes so many times reading this book, it was painful to finish it. Completely overrated.
