Shogun by James Clavell is an adventure novel that gradually ramps up tension over 1100 pages. I have only a few books that maintain a high level of engagement throughout comparable length. (War and Peace, Moby Dick or the Grapes of Wrath). There is also, besides the adventures, an interesting take on a sharp culture clash. After watching the original and 2024 remade miniseries I wasn't sure I would like the book, but surprisingly it was the best of all imo.

Good mmo where quests are story driven instead of FedEx type. Lots of stuff to do in a huge world. Only problem is a lot of players are very high level because it has been around awhile, but soloing is possible tho challenging.

Serviceable fantasy about an apocolytic future. But fairly superficial overall. It was interesting enough that I read the sequels, though as the series goes on the quality falls off as the fantasy element begins to dominate. The main difficulty is that the main premise is illogical. If the purpose is control, how do the hunger games help?

Harrowing look at a world gone mad. Soon everything that happens seems threatening, as the reader becomes as paranoid as the characters. Don't read late at night.

I have long been a fan of agatha christie; but no matter how good the sourece material is, the director and actors and screenwriters somehow have to pull it off when they decide to make a movie. Well, in this fantastic flim, Billy Wilder et al certainly do. What a cast. Detrick, Power, Laughton and all the rest, because there isn't a missed note anywhere. I would say most of the movies (or books) I have read that have a twist ending have rather soured on reflection... but not this one. Even if you know everything, it's still enjoyable to watch. What a treat when everything clicks. Of course I realize it is a kind of magic, like capturing lightning in a bottle. Don't miss this one.
