I personally had the privilege of knowing a WW1 veteran personally. . .Pop Pop as we fondly called him was a dairy farmer from Salisbury near Stonehenge. As a child of about 7 or 8 he would relate stories to me mostly about the rats, large as cats and piebald and skewbald in their coloring.
He said the only holiday he ever had was when he went to France.! A remarkable man in every sense a real hero.
This film make it possible for the audience to capture of glimpse of the horrific trenches. What we are unable to do is smell the carnage, and phemerones of fear in those lads , but boy is ever captured in their faces.
A masterpiece we will remember them.
