Spoilers: The story has a slow start. The early drama around the death of the pope was an anticlimactic, red herring leading nowhere. The cast and acting are superb. The cries of blasphemy are exaggerated. The idea of tolerance is explored and presented through the concept of hermaphroditism. An outwardly male Cardinal demonstrating compassion and empathetic tendencies revisits the decision to remove female reproductive parts which were discovered after a medical emergency landed him in the hospital in his youth. Divisive narratives prevalent in society are echoed as factions that split Conclave voters between liberal ideology of tolerance and acceptance and conservative ideology repackaging hatred, pride, and judgment as piety and moral high ground. The ending seemed rushed and unrealistic for the monumental decision at stake and the power brokers in play but overall this is an enjoyable film that will likely get some Oscar buzz.
