The two women in this show are hilarious. How this can exist in the 1950s and anyone could argue women can't be funny is beyond me. We laughed so much watching this show. It's very clever in its criticism and satire on the assumptions and double standards women face. And the music was lovely. Is it the most woke thing you'll watch? Probably not, but there is something very empowering in how it centers the desires, preferences and ambitions of the two women throughout the film. It's empowering seeing them navigate the world of men with cleverness and female friendship.
It's so interesting thinking about how this came out when so many shows were making women into villians via the noire genre due to a backlash against women working during WWII (the men are back, go home!). It makes some of marilyns lines feel almost scolding of the cultural judgement against women. I think you have to keep that cultural context in mind when watching.
