I always found the women in the cast of SNL a lot funnier than the men. But then again, I have more female stand up comedians on my favorites list than men stand up comedians. So when I came across this DVD, I bought it immediately and was excited to watch it to see some of my favorite recurring characters who have appeared on SNL over the years.
I was very disappointed that for the characters I really find funny, the DVD showed a short (like 30 or less seconds) clip of one of the sketches. Those "short edits" included Sally O'Malley, Mary Katherine Gallagher, Helen Madden, Molly Shannon as Courtney Love, Cheri Oteri as Barbara Walters, Julia Sweeney as Pat, Cheri Oteri and Will Farrell as the cheerleaders, Maya Rudolph as Donatella Versace as well as clippings from the original SNL female cast members Larraine Newman, Gilda Radner & Jane Curtin.
And then there were worthwhile characters that weren't even shown: Cheri Oteri's Collette Reardon (the prescription addicted woman), Cheri Oteri and Molly Shannon in the "Leg Up" sketches as Ann Miller and Debbie Reynolds, Robin Duke and Joe Piscapo as Doug & Wendy Winer and Molly Shannon's Jeannie Darcie ("Don't get me started").
I thought this DVD was going to have back to back full sketches of the funny female characters. I enjoyed some of the full length sketches that were shown: Delicious Dish w/Betty White, The Surprise Party (with Kristen Wiig & Christopher Walken) & Debbie Downer at Disney World. But the other sketches selected like The Lawrence Welk Show w/Kristen Wiig's character with the small hands, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin & Amy Pholer as Hilary Clinton, Weekend Update w/Tina Fey & Amy Pohler, while (somewhat) funny, don't hold enough comic weight to be shown in their entirety. These should have been 30 second clippings. I would rather see a full sketch of Collette Reardon, Helen Madden or any of the great characters mentioned above that got the 30 second treatment as well as the characters that weren't mentioned at all.
