I know the worst fans can be the diehards who are very passionate but at the same time, very toxic. I would consider myself a diehard but I want to be conscious of my review as I don’t want to condemn the show that I was once very excited for.
The cast is fine. Really that’s all I can say. No one is particularly bad but I wouldn’t call them good either. Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-Jae could perhaps be more convincing but they’re consistently let down by bad writing, directing, etc. Charlie Barnett’s character (Yord) I have been unable to get behind at all. The planets and settings have been diverse and interesting. The species likewise are vast and different. Star Wars has never indulged “hard science” so I can easily overlook the fires in space, or sound of the ships in a vacuum, or an other discrepancies that may appear in that context. Overall I’m just left feeling nothing. Which is a brutal state to be in with a franchise so meaningful to me.
I think I’m partially responsible for this interpretation as the show is not what I expected to this point. Since Disney has classified dozens of my favorite novels as “legends,” I have been hoping for a reprisal of these stories from the Disney platform. Speculation that Darth Plagueis and Tenebrous could appear, or even Bane and the introduction to the rule of two, seems all but squashed. Especially after watching the first two episodes, I’m all but certain the show will not incorporate content that molded me as a Star Wars fan. So perhaps the show is not bad or disappointing, but rather not for me.
