I had a great deal of curiosity and anticipation when this was announced. For me, Little Women (1994) was the definitive adaptation and Winona Ryder has always been my Jo March. The 2018 TV miniseries was good, but not good enough to be better than 1994. This one, the cast collectively feels younger. Saoirse Ronan isn't Winona Ryder; she is Louisa Alcott as I've imagined her when reading her letters and journal entries. This Little Women isn't the 1994 one. It isn't as good as, it's better. It's the Little Women, Alcott wanted to but couldn't write. Greta Gerwig hasn't made a movie; she's bottled and voiced and given justice to the heart of a woman whose personal revolution was limited by her time.
