Based on the below comments, I would add that Saira and Regina specifically point to the institutional racism and white supremacy. It isn’t a conspiracy theory to point out that upholding the status quo is perpetuating white supremacy.
And if you are black and driving a Mercedes, you are still black and you aren’t necessarily going to get treated the same as a white person when you get pulled over by the police.
This documentary speaks uncomfortable truths about how white women uphold the status quo, and are blind to their own internalized anti-black racism. I am biracial, and I too have internalized anti-black racism.
It is not possible to grow up and not have internalized white supremacy, it is what rules our world. And to deny it, or attack Saira and Regina for them sharing their very real lived experiences with us, is to miss the point entirely.
I am doing an anti racist book club using their book, and the white women in the club are often attacking the packaging or tone, instead of listening open heartedly to the content. If you can put your feelings to the side, not make this a personal attack, and really listen to this film, you will begin the process of rooting out racism that is within you, and begin to free yourself.
Because as they say: white supremacy hurts everyone, including white women.
