An enjoyable, twisting slow burn backed up by a stellar cast and pretty solid writing and directing. Aubrey Plaza is truly the thing holding the film together. An incredible performance—worth a watch simply for her.

A beautifully shot and written show, it truly works as a spiritual successor to the film we all loved. While I think it had trouble getting off the ground and establishing the expansive yet intensely tight-knit world of professional sports, the show does a great job of balancing the dramas of inequality with the excitement of sports media. And D’arcy Carden is at her absolute best here—she’s a perfect bombshell, carrying a lot of the show’s complex relations to femininity in a world before “modern feminism.” Would be shocked if she was left off the Emmy short list

Incredible show (and an especially familiar one if you’ve ever worked in a kitchen/restaurant). Top notch acting with performances that engage the really subtle atmosphere of the show. It is a tight show —we are often confined in the kitchen space and watch the repetition and camaraderie that food service demands. There are portions of the show where we just observe the space. Like Sydney, we are staging in their space. But the show reminds us through its writing, direction, and acting that there is a larger world where consequences can penetrate the iron fortress of a restaurant kitchen. And here the show excels: it gives us tragedy in the peripheral world but still maintains a sense of hope as long as orders print out in the kitchen. Ps: season 1 episode 7 “The Review” is truly one of the best episodes of tv I’ve seen in a long time. Don’t miss it
