I love the show Outnumbered! All of the women are informed and fabulous! I watched the show today, 8/10. I caught the segment on the NEA promoting a book that had kids smoking pot and kneeling for the National Anthem! I am a retired teacher from Florida, Okaloosa County. I taught 8th grade LA. I totally agree that the book is inappropriate and that parents need to have a say in what their children read!
However, when you focus like you did on the teacher, it puts more negativity towards teachers in general. I know that most all teachers across this great country do not push their political or moral beliefs on children. Most systems have rules and guidelines for this. And, all the teachers I know let parents know what their children are reading and parents are given access to the curriculum. So, my only concern with this segment is that the way you reported placed ALL teachers as people whom do not include the parents. No teacher I know want to be your children’s parent. That is refreshing that you all feel that way! Believe it or not, some parents do think that it is the teachers job to train up their children. All teachers I know, would love it if all parents felt like all of you feel about that. It only helps the classroom environment.
All in all, just please do not report as if all teachers are like the teachers you talked about. In my experience, there are more teachers like me, not like the ones you reported on today.
Thanks and continue to do the great job you all do on Outnumbered!
