Having played the majority of the Lego games throughout the years I found the game to be fun, but overall missed the mark for my expectations. The game tried to reinvent itself instead of building on the beloved foundation. Trying to update the game is fine, but that should mean we get more out of it as a game rather than find the majority of the levels reduced to 5 minutes or so for each.
If you're like me, you probably sank hours replaying all your favorite levels with your favorite characters (or custom characters) but now the experience is negatively compounded by one, the lack of custom characters which I can overlook due to how many characters there are, but two I can't overlook being forced to fight bosses with the characters from the story mode of the level. The most fun part is being able to play the game as you see fit. For example I wanted to have the clone wars cannon fight of Ahsoka vs Maul. You're forced to switch to Anakin/Obiwan to actually do the lightsaber clashing mechanic.
Overall, I had fun playing the game through the first time, seeing everything adapted into a more modern form, being able to explore the hubs of each planet is something I think was a great addition as I love to explore places. However, the game feels much less Lego than previous games, you don't build nearly as many things as before, there's no bigger Lego puzzles, there's not even a bonus room where you had the town you could destroy like in The Complete Saga. The game has significantly less replayability than previous titles and therefore isn't really worth it to me.
Knowing what I know now I probably would have skipped this game and just gone back and played The Complete Saga if the urge struck me.
