On the one hand, I think the directing was top-notch; both main leads acted amazingly for their given characters. The songs were fantastic, and I can appreciate that the movie tries to sprinkle in some awareness over women’s rights/empowerment and that men don’t need to be totally masculine. I also loved the scene where Rocky’s family (mom n sis) basically walk out on Tjouri.
On the other hand, while I can appreciate the movie instilling powerful messages/meanings I can’t help but wonder if maybe this aspect feels unnecessary sometimes. Other movies before this one already address these things. So it’s not like the movie is saying anything new. Frankly it’s also annoying when you’re watching a good movie and then the movie hamfists a message about gender equality bla bla bla. I don’t need to be reminded of that. I watch movies to laugh, escape and turn my brain off.
Also, the main male lead character (and some of the other characters) come off completely 1-dimensional and unlikable. I get however, that perhaps that was intentional- we aren’t supposed to like them or be invested in them. But there’s a part in the movie where Rani’s mom (the English professor) asks Rani why she’s even consider marrying Rocky when he is so uneducated and uncultured.. frankly I kinda agree. The dude is a complete buffoon. Sorry, if I am going to marry someone .. I’m not saying my partner has to be a genius but I’d prefer my partner to not be a total idiot. I can appreciate we do get some growth from him though. However the main love story is hard to get into sometimes at some parts of the film.
In my honest opinion a better story would have been between Rani’s grandma and Rocky’s grandpa. I think that subplot was so much better, and it could have been its own movie. It should have been the main movie (albeit with a different title). Would have been much more unique. A lot of love stories happen when people are young, so having this kind of twist would make it more original.
