Telltale lost its way
I wanted to like this game so much… but I couldn’t. SPOILER ALERT I’m going in depth on the story so far (or lack of)
Story
The story isn’t interesting, like at all. It’s a typical “oh wow we found this abandoned ship, I wonder what happened” plot twist where everyone was killed and you want to find out why, the only problem is they also add in this plot element where the captain of the ship “bossmang” hates you and try’s to kill you. The characters are all unlikable including the protagonist. They all have very heavy accents and sound like they are forced to read their scripts at gunpoint, and talk in their country’s dialect and the subtitles don’t fix it! The characters will be having a whole conversation calling eachother things and the English subtitles but the word they said instead of translating it to English.
If you want this game to instantly capture you like how the walking dead did you will sorely be disappointed. There is no charm to this game, or no intrigue.
Gameplay
Typical telltale, walk around and listen to your character monologue. You learn how combat works and never fight again past this part, and you tomb Raider jump around on a ladder in space. This games “innovative” features were in Dead Space from 2008. It’s a snore!
Graphics
The graphics are great, I won’t pretend. But the character models all have this sunset overdrive look to them where they look like charactures of real people (I guess the actors they are based on), and at the same time suffers from TellTales character design style. The world seems small so far, we are stuck in a ship for an hour and get to fly around some ruckus for a bit, at one point you zoom in on a planet that was super low res and funny.
Final verdict: Episode 1 is a stinker, it makes me not want to even finish the game or find out more. TellTale has failed to capture me and build a world that is interesting or characters in it that aren’t bafoons. Not worth the 50 bucks they are asking
