I dont know if the screenplay was faithful to the novel but it was really bad. As usual Gary Cooper was good as well as Raymond Massey but Jennifer was terrible, a clear case of overacting. The plot line was so bad it made me feel uncomfortable. Supposedly Jennifer Oneil falls in love with gary cooper while watching him in a quarry but then does not follow through in a normal fashion but does a terrible job of portraying a psychologically damaged woman incable of love. Also, the plot is really contrived. There is always resistance to change but usually good ideas make into the mainstream eventually. Most people are simply not that attached to architecture, those feelings are usually reserved for religion or politics. The characters were also very monolithic. People are not black or white but shades of gray.
