Just watched the movie on HBO. I created an account to warn y’all that this movie is absolutely awful!!! I gave it 5 stars just so y’all can see this review. Not even 30 minutes in and I changed it. I ended up going back to finish it before I reviewed it and I just couldn’t put up with it any longer.
The movie is narrated by Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) with his awful accent. The movie should have been called Colonel instead of Elvis since it is all from Tom Parker’s point of view. The actor that played Elvis did a great job. He looked like him, spoke like him and sang like him. His back is indeed hurting from doing his best to carry what he was given to work with.
I expected this movie to be about Elvis’ early years, his music career, his relationship with Priscilla, his drug addiction, etc. Every scene lasts no longer than five minutes and there’s no sequence of events. They began with Tom Parker being hospitalized. Tom Parker discovering Elvis while stalking him a bit. They incorporated some history for dramatic effect such as segregation, MLK’s death and Robert Kennedy’s death. Then they move on to Tom Parker. It’s such a jumbled mess I don’t know where to start.
I ignored the awful music of Jay Z in The Great Gatsby and endured that movie because it was really heart wrenching. This movie Elvis is an all around unbearable mess.
I’m thankful that Baz Luhrman and whoever else let this movie happen was not a part of Walk the Line when it was made. They would have made it like the movie Walk Hard.
