Before watching the show I read the reviews and man were they ever misleading. I personally enjoyed the show, the only thing I didn’t like was the constant going back and forth between the past a present. I thought the acting was good with what the actors had to work with. This show seems to be very much of a way to get teens interested in the franchise by merging the Resident Evil universe with ours; our real world combined with reimagined and consistent parts of the RE universe. With the setting being in a combination of our world and the RE world, things such as COVID and singers, like Billie Eilish, exist in this world.
The majority of reviews I came across before watching the show were very sexist; against how the story focused around women and how “all” the music came from women artists, however the music is very much not that. There was a review that said that the character Billie was derived from Billie Eilish which is not the case; Billie in the show is a 14-year-old girl who lives in our world of 2022 who sees Billie Eilish as a role model and idol.
Another review I saw complained about the character Albert Wesker in the show is different than in the games; in the show he is a person of colour while in the game he is white. I understand why this reviewer said this as I am also a big fan of consistency in video game inspired shows, however, it is important to realize that, like I said before, this show is supposed to take place in a universe where our world and the RE world exist within each other, meaning that consistency isn’t really important.
Overall, this series is very much a Resident Evil inspired show where some events in the games happen in our world and I enjoyed that. Although sometimes the script wasn’t the greatest, the cinematography is amazing, and the acting is out of this world. Please give the show a chance after reading these reviews instead of not giving it a chance after reading the reviews. I am happy I didn’t let the reviews affect my decision to watch the series.
