This is how my mother, Fania Feldman, survived in the Ukraine. The story line is different as of course everyones background and experience differ. Seeing this portrayed in a film makes it so much more real to me. I can "see" where my mother came from in her small village near Buczacz. The land, the forest, the tall wheat fields, the church, the priest, the home, the barn, the clothing, the knitting and of course, when no one else is around saying the Hebrew prayers. My mother's name was Marushka. She also had blonde braids and spoke fluent Ukrainian. All these memories from my mother telling me bits and pieces at different times have stayed with me and will be with me forever. She did not come across many Germans. Her friend who would not survive was murdered by the Ukrainians and I recall my mother telling me how brutal the Ukrainian murderers were and her friend said to her, "Fania you will survive. Tell the world what kind of death we had." It was a miracle that my mother survived during the war years as a young girl.
