Hilary Mantel's Tudor trilogy is simply non pareil. She wrote superb literature despite all the shlock historical writers out trying to do the same. No one can touch this author's talent. Her death leaves a huge hole in bookdom.

The Hills at Home is a national domestic treasure, its pages will leave you tearfully laughing at the author's marvelous storytelling talent. She nails her characters through the worn carpeting of old floors in the Hills house, a retreat to regroup and relive. One of my favorite novels, along with its two sequels. I have read the set FOUR TIMES and now my husband is reading them aloud for our mutual enjoyment. 5 epic stars!!!

Well, I couldn't put it down. Being an aging woman (of a certain age), I relate to the character's desire for peace and privacy. He caves in to a con man aka hippie bum, who moves onto a little used part of the property and gradually makes life unbearable. Other characters dip in and out with their respectivve issues and life and death events. I love Stegner's writing. He asks all the right, hard questions.
