Based on a true story is an insightful, satiric commentary about the ways society compromises its soul to get rich as well as to be entertained. While the former is a common theme in media and art today, the latter felt incredibly fresh and intuitive. The series stars Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as an expecting couple who are struggling in their relationships with money, work, friends, as well as each other. After discovering a local serial killer is in fact a friend of theirs, they blackmail the murderer into making a podcast with them which ends up becoming incredibly lucrative. However this takes its toll, as all criminal secrets do.
While many critique Based on a True Story for having a ludicrous, impossible story, I believe that it couldn't be more relevant. The reality is people are in fact making millions off of criminal behavior, whether it be their own or not. Based on a True Story is truly based on a true story.
For those of you who have yet to view this show, I suggest you watch it yourself with these themes in mind. I promise you will not be disappointed.
