I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It explores topics of identity and self-expression and connections between people throughout time and distance, as well as telling the story of a tumultuous period of China's history and grief. Madeleine Thien did a wonderful job putting music into words and showing how different people react when put in difficult situations. I can definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to read a beautifully written book that will leave you in a state of contemplation.
