I am a big RPG fan and Hogwart's Legacy doesn't disappoint. My favorite things about the game are the immersive storyline and the flexible and satisfying combat system.
Storyline:
I sometimes get annoyed in RPG games when there is too much dialog, but in Hogwart's Legacy there is a lot of dialog but I don't mind it. The story gets you engaged in both the school and the overarching plot. I am mesmerized wandering the halls and attending classes.
Combat System:
I thought this looked limited based on the number of spells in the game, but the combination of spells mixed with varied fighting areas, I find myself being creative in combat and getting enjoyment out of almost every victory.
The reasons I gave this 4/5 and not 5/5 are as follows:
- NPC dialog: There are almost no dialog options with NPCs that aren't a part of your quest. They do have a lot of side conversations with each other, but those conversations get repetitive. Walking up to NPCs triggers no response from them, making them seem almost like zombies staring into the distance. I have to say, this may have been acceptable back in the 2010, but in 2023, I would expect more interaction from non-central NPCs
- Enemy AI: This, too, feels a little dated. There are many battles in which I can exploit terrain or other mechanics in the game to make battles easy. An example would be killing an enemy in a group of enemies from a distance and then hiding. The enemies are standing next to their dead friend and just shrug it off and say I ran away. I feel like in 2023 we shouldn't have "it was just the wind" dialog from remaining enemies. It's still fun, though!
Summary:
Overall, I am hooked. I love the game and look forward to completing it and seeing what might be next in the way of DLC.
