This movie is a wonderful, surprising glimpse into a little remembered adventure from what feels like a very distant fifty years ago. The combination of historical and contemporary footage, the careful study of complex, interesting people, and the celebration of an important part of the American identity--the love of adventure--make this film a must see!
The adventures explored in the film turn out to be everything from uniting people around the cause of improving the country for its most humble or disadvantaged citizens as Kennedy aspired to do, climbing mountain peaks and rafting rivers under the leadership of mountaineering icon Jim Whittaker, and even breaking open the space for a music scene and lifestyle that put Seattle Grunge into its own place in history with Jim's son Bobby. A delightful, celebratory excursion across space, through time, and into the lives of accidental friends who experience wonder, delight, disappointment, inexplicable loss and triumph along the way!
