THE UNTALENTED MR. RIPLEY
I must admit I did not think this series could be an improvement on the great 1999 film but it is worse than my already low expectations.
Apart from old, Tom Ripley in this version is utterly disgusting and it is impossible to understand why even an equally uninteresting Dicky, would like to have him around. As said Dicky in this series is also old and looks slightly like a degenerate and Margie is just plain boring. Another negative is the moronic argument by the director that since the series occurs in Italy in the 1950’s it will be better reflected in black and white. Why? Is the director saying that the vibrant colours of the Amalfi coast were not so vibrant in the 50’s? Has he not realised that had colour film been available at that time, no director would have shot a film, even less if it it has Amalfi as a background, in black and white?
Finally what made me stop watching this pastiche is the constant repetition of mundane scenes, we see characters going up and down the stairs for hours, we also see every little detail of Ripley disposing and cleaning of the bodies, the lift going up and down over and over…it is so boring! I am not sure if the director tried to emulate Hitchcock but what he achieved was creating the feeling that he was paid by the minute of episode.
Overall a bigger disappointment than expected. Do not bother with this and watch the 1999 film instead.
