The show is ok, but pretty flat and boring overall. There were a few good moments, but most of the time it was just irrelevant, corny scenes or long, boring conversations between the dad, the brother, or the record label. I liked the backstory of the other family members but It really felt more like Abraham the Series; it didn’t even feel like Selena was the main character of the show. Instead, they give Selena a shallow personality who’s interests only seem to be dying her hair and going shopping for clothes. Almost everyone else in the show has more character than her. However, what bothered me the most was the casting. While I loved Christian Serratos as Rosita on the Walking Dead, I did not really like her as Selena. It’s not her fault, I know she worked very hard and tried her best for the role. She is a beautiful woman, but simply does not look or act like Selena. First of all, she’s half white which automatically takes away from the more indigenous, latina look Selena had. Second, she is very thin and does not have the bigger, curvy body Selena embraced and was known for. She also can’t sing or dance that well. It sounds nit-picky, but after watching JLo do a near-perfect job portraying Selena in the ‘97 movie, it’s hard to enjoy a mediocre portrayal of her.
With all that being said, I will admit the show did get better as it went on. I did like how they showed the different styles Selena had and not just the main one she is known for. I honestly did not know she had curly blonde hair at one point. They also played many of her lesser known songs as well. I also appreciate the accuracy in the interviews and performances. I actually looked many of them up on youtube and saw that they were pretty spot on. Although I really didn’t like this season, I am optimistic and hope they do a better job in the next season after receiving a lot of criticism.
