***SPOILER ALERT***
People who just label this a JL rip off and that's it either haven't watched it properly or don't really get it. It's pretty face paced compared to most of the bloated stuff that is released nowadays, although during the first couple of episodes I did have to get used to the format, but after that it kinda blasts through your wall like the the Coolade man throws it's story hard at your face and leaves whether you like it or not. Some of it's comparisons to modern day war tactics are not exactly subtle and that definitely made for an interesting "What would the world and wars be like if Superheroes existed" plotline. The POTUS War on Homosexuality seems a little shoehorned in but even that seems intentional given the social stance on LGBTQIA Superheroes over the past few years. Sexuality does play an important part in the story but it kinda get buried at times like they were worried it might be "too gay for some". I think it worked overall though and it didn't seem like they just took a character and made them gay to appease the LGBTQIA community like some shows do. *cough Gotham*
Beyond the fun and violence there is a lot of other comparison with real world events especially how the "enemy/Insert Any Arab Terrorist/Country Group Here" is embellished by Knight Hawk as an excuse to create a massive army like *Insert Most Superpower Countries Here* and invade and destroy whomever or whatever they please. There's a mix of WW2 and modern warfare references such as the uniforms Knight Hawk's Army wears, the drones he uses and in the end I really ended up feeling the weight of the decision he had to make and how his psyche slowly fractures throughout. Awesome mans twist was well placed and made what could have been a fairly by the books turning on your teammates story to quite a clenching moment. By this point you know KH is well and truly beyond help so *SPOILER* her death is no surprise. If this was placed earlier in the plot twist scheme it probably would have had more of an impact.
Of course as always there is mention of the "greater good" but Speed also mentions the fact that all wannabe world dictators (who were also just normal men like Knight Hawk) were also driven by similar ideologies. It alludes to the fact we are all different and not everyone is driven by the same ideas unless it is hammered in to them by force, which in reality is what happens, therefore the only way there can be complete world peace is to control and pacify humanity so they all think the same, as him.
While not everyone wants to lives their lives preparing for the unknown whether it be giant squid head alien invasions, nuclear war or are just plain out of their mind like Hitler, it does seem to allude to the fact almost everyone lives their lives in order to adhere to the socially excepted narrative imposed upon us by the media.
I would love to see a sequel, but then that would probably kill off a lot of what made this such an interesting story, after sacrificing everything and everyone, facing the question "What if you are wrong...?".
If you ignore those deeper messages then it's still a fun and funky JL rip off with cool EDM music and although the 8bit/Claymation inserts can sometimes be jarring it mostly works. 5/5 from me.
