This Anurag Kashyap take on modern day love & romance is as real as it can get without getting preachy or forcing unrealistic shades of black and white on the characters, atypical of a usual Bollywood offering. The scenes towards the climax where both Robbie and Vikki let Rumi go -not because of their sacrifice for the lady love but because they knew they could not handle the other man in her life - are a refreshing and honest take on relationships, standing far apart from the preachy sacrificial monologues we have been accustomed to all this while. The movie wins largely because of the superb performances of the lead actors and the endearing supporting characters along with great cinematography dipped in earthy picturesque frames. Vicky Kaushal and Tapsee Pannu are effortless in their portrayals of internally conflicted characters madly and unapologetic-ally in love with each other while Abhishek Bachchan plays the understated role with amazing subtlety and stoic restraint. Amit Trivedi's background score is not only deeply intertwined with the screenplay but the liberally interspersed songs frequently take over the dialogues from the characters and elevate the mood and intensity of the scenes by several notches. The screenplay gets a bit indulgent in the second half though and an endearing but elongated climax scene could come across as unnecessarily stretched to many, to mention a few flaws in an otherwise brilliant effort.
